After playing three successive cup games, Wivenhoe were back in league action at the Blackstone Stadium. There were again changes for Wivenhoe, Angus Poole and CJ Cabulo were back in the side after a spell out of the side. New signing defensive Main Olagunju was on the bench.
Ahead of the game, Dean Merrett was presented with the Agust player of the month award.
In a half of few chances, Wivenhoe should have been in front within the first five minutes. CJ sent the ball wide with a diving header and Angus Poole hit the post when he met a corner with his head.
The only other notable moment of the first half was when Lewis Hagland limped off to be replaced by Peter Maina. The midfielder was later confirmed to have injured his hamstring and is likely to be out for several weeks.
Wormley created their best chance of the game when they broke through on Ben Gallifant's goal but hit the post rather than the back of the net. Another simple ball did give the visitors the lead, a straight ball wasn't dealt with and allowed an easy one on one shooting chance which this time was taken.
Wivenhoe almost responded instantly. CJ Cabulo broke into the area on the left and hit a shot at goal which was deflected up into the air by the keeper's leg, Dean Merrett met the falling ball with a goal bound effort but it was and cleared away on the line.
With just minutes of the game remaining, Emmanuel Olagunju came on for his Wivenhoe debut and made an unfortunate instant impact at the wrong end. A Wormley shot was heading across goal and Mani stuck out a leg to clear but instead deflected the ball into the Wivenhoe goal. It may already have been going in but it was enough to confirm the visitors win in a tight game at the Blackstone Stadium.
The visitors were delighted with the hard fought win which moved them above Wivenhoe in the league.
