There were several changes to the Wivenhoe team which played at the weekend. Tim Dennis was available for selection and made a first start of the season, he was partnered in central defence by new signing Connor Smith. In the forward positions, CJ Cabulo and Lewis Stantiall had earnt starting places after good performances coming off the bench against Frenford.
The first half saw a fairly even contest with Wivenhoe having perhaps more of the possession but Coggeshall aiming to create chances on the break. The home side saw a few chances go wide or comfortably collected by Whymark in the Wivenhoe goal. The Dragons had the best chance of the first half when a Jack Mead shot from inside the area went straight at former Dragons keeper Lewis Down. Tom Lakin was looking lively leading the line for Wivenhoe, a shot from an offside position hit the post and a penalty shout was waved away by the referee.
The only other notable incident of the first half was a clash of heads between Pete Maina and a Coggeshall defender. The Coggeshall player came off worst, was substituted and eventually taken to hospital by ambulance. We wish him all the best with his recovery and hope he is back playing soon.
The second half again saw Wivenhoe create the better of the chances. Dean Merrett's shot on the turn from inside the area was held by the Coggeshall keeper. Tim Dennis connected with a header from a corner which looked to be heading in before being cleared away on the line thanks to an alert piece of Coggeshall defending.
The goal when it came saw CJ Cabulo break down the left before cutting the ball inside to Merrett, he managed to pull the ball across goal into space where an onrushing Jack Mead fired high into the top corner.
The Dragons saw out the rest of the game, defending well at the back from a series of corners and claiming a clean sheet and all three points.
