Wivenhoe Town Manager Gary Monti has confirmed which players have been retained ahead of the new season.

The new season is due to start at the end of July and a core group of players have remained at the club following the early cancellation of the 2020/21 season.

Ben Gallifant - (105 games, 3 goals) - Goalkeeper - Returned to Wivenhoe from Little Oakley ahead of the 2019/20 season. A good shot stopper who distributes the ball well having also played in midfield for the Dragons.

Arran Rae - (8 games, 0 goals) - Goalkeeper - A young goalkeeper who joined the club last season and proved an able deputy with a string of solid performances.

Josh Chapman - (29 games, 4 goals) - Defender - A right back or wide midfielder who returned to the club in early 2020 after a spell at Coggeshall United. Originally joined the club in the 2018/19 season and impressed with a string of strong performances.

Matt Coppen - (43 games, 1 goal) - Defender - Signed for the 2019/20 season, he became an ever present at the heart of the Wivenhoe defence. His former teams include Heybridge Swifts, Burnham Ramblers and more recently Halstead Town. A very good defender who reads the game well.

Connor Smith - (29 games, 3 goals) - Defender - A central defender who signed in Summer 2019, he is a tall defender who reads the games well. His former clubs include Bowers & Pitsea, Cambridge United, Braintree Town and Billericay Town.

Jack Mead - (46 games, 11 goals) - Defender / Midfielder - Joined the club from Saffron Walden Town ahead of the 2019 / 20 season. An ever present at full back or in central midfield he always put in a high energy performance as well as contributing goals.

Sam Mead - (34 games, 6 goals) - Midfielder - Signed for Wivenhoe during the 2018/19 season. His former clubs include Great Baddow, Heybridge Swifts and Saffron Walden Town. A creative attacking midfielder capable of contributes his share of goals and assists.

Caden Vine - (4 games, 0 goals) - Midfielder -
A quick skilful winger who joined the club from lower-level football during last season. Made a good impression before the early curtailment of the season.

David Lopez - (59 games, 5 goals) - Midfielder - Re-joined Wivenhoe ahead of the 2019/20 season having spent a season and half at Long Melford. Composed on the ball and a good passer.

Karl Swanborough - (6 games, 6 goals) - Forward - A prolific goal scorer who joined the club in October 2020 from Burnham Ramblers. Was the league’s top joint goal scorer in 2018/19 with 34 goals in all competitions.

Jules Bavin - (13 games, 1 goal) - Forward - Returned to Wivenhoe last season after a year out with injury, his former clubs include Burnham Ramblers and Tiptree Jobserve. A real handful for defenders, he makes a nuisance of himself and leads by example.

George Hart - (29 games, 9 goals) - Forward - Joined towards the end of 2018 / 19 season but has seen his time at the club disrupted by injury. A composed finisher with pace and good ability on the ball. Includes Heybridge Swifts and Burnham Ramblers amongst his former clubs.

A number of additions have also been made to the first team squad. Details of who they are will be published soon.

Several players have also departed the club since last season was curtailed.

Club legend Tim Dennis (252 games, 21 goals) has moved away from the area so will not be involved next season. Tim has played some part in every season for the past decade playing in the side which won the First Division title in 2015/16. Tim is amongst the club’s top ten appearance makers in senior football, his contribution to the club has been significant and his time at the Dragons will be fondly remembered.

Club Captain Dean Merrett (37 games, 16 goals) has also moved away from the area. Whilst regulars Ross James (42 games, 10 goals) and Matt Tapley (25 games, 6 goals) have also departed the Dragons. Ben Timson (11 games, 0 goals) and James Couzens (10 games, 0 goals) have also left Wivenhoe Town.

The Dragons are back in training with the squad getting pre-season fixtures getting underway next week at Tiptree Jobserve.
