Wivenhoe Town are through to the final of the 2022/23 Tolleshunt D'Arcy Memorial Cup after beating Saffron Walden Town on penalties.
The Tolleshunt D'Arcy Memorial Cup is the Essex FA's annual Charity fundraiser for their benevolent fund.
The Dragons faced a tough test against a side currently midway up the Essex Senior League, the Division above Wivenhoe. It became even more difficult when Wivenhoe goalkeeper Matt Brand Barker was sent off just fifteen minutes into the game for handling the ball outside the area. The Dragons brought on keeper Lewis Hawley, who had been injured in the warm up, in place of outfielder Glory Longi.
The ten man Dragons then put in a resolute defensive performance to keep the game at 0 - 0 until deep in the second half. Saffron Walden Town took the lead and seems destined for a spot in the final before Callum Mcglinchey levelled the scores with a late, late equaliser. Mcglinchey's 10th of the season.
That goal took it to penalties. Lewis Hawley saved Saffron Walden's penultimate spot kick whilst George Kuderovitch, Ryan Culleton, Sam Ogbonna Kalu, Tom Ashworth and Farai Dutiro all netted for Wivenhoe Town.
The Dragons were through to the final against the odds!
Having beaten two sides from the Essex Senior League, the Dragons will face either Isthmian League North side Heybridge Swifts or National League South side Chelmsford City in the final.
Details of the final to be confirmed!
