At this very early stage of the season, this game saw the two sides in 1st and 2nd going head to head for the chance to be top ahead of FA Vase weekend. The Wivenhoe team saw a number of changes from the side that had won at Burnham Ramblers. Lewis Hagland, Tom Lakin and Angus Poole were both back in the starting line-up.
The first half saw Wivenhoe's opportunities fall to Tom Lakin but the opportunities were missed, denied by last ditch tackles and saved. Towards the end of the half, former Wivenhoe player Jamie Baker saw a chance go past Whymark's post and another opportunity missed. It had been an even opening period with the Dragons perhaps edging it on possession and opportunities.
The second period opened in a similarly even manner but it was Halstead who broke the deadlock when a through ball was latched on to and slotted underneath an advancing Whymark. Wivenhoe responded with some good pressure but without being able to force any clear opportunities. It was Jamie Baker who wrapped it up for the home side, after a Halstead attacker beat several Wivenhoe players, he pulled it across to Baker who finished the move off.
Wivenhoe responded again with good positive play but without really troubling Halstead. It was the home side who probably looked most likely to increase their lead. The final whistle ended the Dragons run of four straight wins.
