Gary Monti was missing seven players from the midweek cup squad but was boosted by the return of David Lopez. The central midfielder was available for a first start having re-joined the club in summer.
Wivenhoe opened the scoring when a bit of quick thinking saw Sam Mead rise from a foul and play a quick freekick into the path of an unmarked Peter Maina who smashed the ball into the net off the cross bar, his first league goal of the season.
Wivenhoe then had a let off when Burnham missed an opportunity, powering an unmarked header over the bar. The home side equalised shortly after, finishing off a low comer that was poorly defended.
Wivenhoe began to put pressure on the Burnham defence, a header was cleared off the line and then a Burnham defender made a mess of a header back to his keeper, missing his team mate and putting the ball just past the post. The subsequent comer saw Dean Merrett put Wivenhoe back in front, heading in from the delivery.
Merrett then won a freekick put wide, the ball was swung into the box and David Lopez rose highest to head down and away from the keeper to extend the Dragons lead.
In the second period it was Peter Maina who added to the score line, finishing off a chance after being played through on goal.
The final whistle signalled three away points and moved Wivenhoe Town top of the early season league table.
