Ahead of the match, manager Gary Monti said his team were still looking to gel and find their best form. This early season cup match against Border League opposition was another opportunity for the new look squad to play together in what was likely to be a tough fixture.

There were a number of changes from the weekend, Dan Williams came in at full back for his debut. Sam Mead, Matt Coppen, Josh Chapman were all into the starting eleven. There were changes of role for Peter Maina and Jack Mead.

Peter Maina, deployed as a forward for the first time this season, had the best chance of the opening minutes. Played in behind the opposition defence, he hit a low shot to the keeper's left which brought out a good save with the ball being pushed wide of the post. The opening goal came from CJ Cabulo. The winger had already been threatening the Bentley defence with his willingness to take on defenders and it was by that route that his first goal from the club came. Picking the ball up outside the box, CJ ran at a defender and beat him before whipping a shot low across the keeper and into the far corner.

The second half begun with a substitution, Josh Chapman had been injured at the end of the first half following a challenge, he was replaced by George Hart. Josh was eventually diagnosed with ligament damage. We hope he makes a speedy recovery and is back playing soon.

Bentley started the second half the stronger side and eventually scored. A cross from the right was hit on the half volley past Laurence Whymark to level the scores.

It took Wivenhoe another 15 minutes to get on top in the game and start creating a string of chances. George Hart got behind the Great Bentley defence and pulled a ball across goal to an onrushing Tom Lakin, he met the ball with too much force and it flew over a keeperless goal. Hart then got in on the left and hit a low shot towards goal, it looked to be going in but was kept out by the hand of a sliding defender. A penalty was awarded, Lakin, who had scored a penalty on the opening day, stepped up but his strike had too much on it and went over the bar.

Hart was again involved when he fired the ball across goal from the right, Jack Mead was able to get the faintest touch on it but it was not enough to divert it inside the post.

The winning goal came when CJ Cabulo intercepted a pass, charged towards goal and sent a fine effort past the keeper to restore the Wivenhoe lead.

Following the restart CJ almost completed his hattrick when Hart layed the ball on for him but his effort was pushed wide for a corner.

The final whistle signalled Wivenhoe's progress into the next round where they will play fellow First Division side Halstead Town.
