Wivenhoe Town got back to winning ways in the First Division Knock Out Cup

The Dragons had been drawn against Felixstowe & Walton United Reserves of the First Division North in the First Round of the Knock Out Cup. Wivenhoe had lost their previous three games in closely contested games. The line up again saw changes as Tim Dennis and Angus Poole returned to the side. Sam Mead also made his return from injury after a period out with an ankle injury. Mani Olugunju made his first start since joining Wivenhoe. Young goalkeeper Nathan Wakefield stepped up from the Reserves to make his debut for Wivenhoe Town.

The Dragons should have been in front in the first minutes if not for a good save, Pete Maina was played clean through on goal, he hit a decent effort but it was smothered by the Felixstowe goalkeeper. The first Wivenhoe goal did come shortly afterwards, good work by Jack Mead down the left saw him get into the area and pull the ball across the face of goal when it found CJ who was on hand to strike the ball past the visitors goalkeeper.

It was soon two, Jack Mead was again the provider. Sending a corner in from the right for Ross James heads into the back of the goal. Leading by two in ten minutes it looked like it would be a comfortable evening for Wivenhoe but the visitors got one back with a ball in behind the Wivenhoe defence which was latched onto and finished low into the far corner past Wakefield.

The visitors continued to push for goals and Nathan Wakefield was called upon to make another good when another ball in behind the defence left the Dragons' goal exposed. At the other end, Peter Maina could have made it three when the Felixstowe keeper missed his kick with Maina collecting in side the area but from a wide angle with the goal open he hit the side netting with his effort.

Just before half time, the visitors equalised. Another straight ball through the middle of the pitch opened up the Wivenhoe defence, leaving Wakefield exposed and allowing the Felixstowe attacker attacker to chip the Dragons keeper.

The start of the second half almost saw Sam Mead almost create a bizarre goal. Mead's shot was miss cleared and sent spinning backwards be heading in for an own goal before a fine improvised save saw the ball clawed off and away from the goal line. Wivenhoe did take the lead again through a Felixstowe mistake, a poor clearance only went as far as Ross James who advanced with the ball, took it round the keeper and scored his second of the night.

Sam Mead and Angus Poole saw efforts on goal saved by the Felixstowe keeper whilst at the other end a good chance saw Wakefield make a good save with the follow up being cleared off the line.

The fourth goal which sealed it was the best of the night. Sam Mead beat a defender with quick feet on the edge of the area before firing a shot past the Felixstowe keeper giving him no chance.

After a run of three defeats it was important for Wivenhoe to get back to winning ways. The Dragons will face Brightlingsea Regent Reserves at home in the second round. Match to be played on Tuesday 29th October at the Blackstone Stadium.
